Energyficient Systems, Inc. is a lighting distributor specialized and focused on the ESCO or energy services company market nationwide.
Our ESCO customers value our unique coupling of cost knowledge with the design, installation and construction phases of their project. It enables us the ability to deliver the most comprehensive and cost effective projects with the most energy savings to our customers.
We provide turnkey service and work with our customers to help them develop a project from the ground up – project management, audit/survey, design, engineering, materials distribution, construction management, and installation. We also research all applicable financial and tax incentives. Our efficiency designs are custom and always engineered to a client’s specific needs. Our proposals are investment-grade assessments that provide our clients the information they need to make educated, focused, financial decisions.
We’re dedicated to transforming facilities through the inspired use of light. We increase the efficiency, and reduce costs, but we improve working conditions and make the space more effective for the occupants.

The Team
Chad Palmer — President, CEO
Chad provides leadership and vision for the Energyficient Team. Born and raised in Burlington, Iowa — where he still lives — lighting and electrical work is in his blood. He began working for his father’s electrical contracting company at the age of ten.
Today, Chad has over 30 years of experience in the lighting industry and is well respected as a leader, innovator and entrepreneur. He is also the inventor behind several new products for Energyficient including the new Q-Lux brand of LED lighting and the Q-Series electrical junction box and utility luminaire. Chad is proud to be a Certified Lighting Efficiency Professional (CLEP) through the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), and is a long time member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America where he has served on the Industrial Lighting Committee. He is very active in his community and industry. He serves on many local committees including Burlington’s Zoning Board of Adjustment and several other committees under Greater Burlington Partnership, including the Burlington Lightscape Committee.
He is also a recent graduate of the Greater Burlington Leadership program. Chad believes strongly in and encourages his team to pursue continuing of their education and community involvement. He takes a special interest in creating seminars and including special details in his proposals to further his client’s education and understanding of the possibilities and the science of lighting efficiency.
When he is not working on the business of Energyficient you’ll find Chad on a beach or in his boat with his Wife and Daughter; or pursuing his other interests in politics, horsepower, audio, and music.
Justin Joens — Senior Vice President, CCO, Business Development
Justin is Energyficient’s first client contact. With close to 20 years experience in business management and sales, Justin’s dedication to providing exceptional customer service is integral to Energyficient’s ability to design high-efficiency lighting installations. His excellent interpersonal and communication skills ensure a positive sales experience for our customers.
As CCO, Justin is committed to not only establishing, but also nurturing client relationships. He conducts in-depth interviews with customers and potential clients so he can help deliver a project that is engineered to meet the customer’s energy goals. With his strong capability to problem solve, Justin applies foresight and creativity to individually address client needs.
Justin is based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Although he spends most of his day on the phone or email, he can also be found on-site assessing client concerns. When not talking with customers, Justin is cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes or perfecting his swing on the golf course.
J. Byers Wolf — Vice President, COO, Design Engineering
Byers is a native of Fort Madison, Iowa, and has more than 15 years lighting and electrical experience, and is a licensed journeyman electrician. Starting in 2004, Byers held an apprentice position before going to Northeast Iowa Community College. He graduated with his AA in Industrial Electrical in 2006, and then went on to work for an electrical contractor before moving into the lighting sector. Byers has a passion to learn and grow within the lighting market, in an effort to always provide Energyficient’s customers with the highest quality lighting designs and projects.
As Chief Operating Officer, Byers spends most of his time designing/engineering, providing oversight and direction for the engineering staff, and cultivating manufacturer relationships. He begins all new opportunities by conducting on-site assessments to provide baseline data for engineering, and works very closely with the sales team, engineers, and project managers during all phases of project development and construction.
When not on-site or designing a new lighting project, he can be found spending time with his wife and three children, or reading a good book. Byers is a member and shepherd at Harmony Bible Church, and a committee member of The Greater Burlington Partnership Government Affairs committee.
Kirk VanScoy — Senior Account Manager
Kirk is originally from Ames, Iowa, and majored in Retail Management at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa. He has more than 10 years of experience in the lighting industry, including professional lighting audits and project design geared to maximize energy savings. Kirk also has several years of direct sales experience, and is currently Senior Project Manager for schools, commercial and industrial customers.
Energyficient is committed to on-site safety not only for our crews but for our customers as well. That’s why Kirk has completed both his 10-hour and 30-hour OSHA training, as well as General Industry Safety and Health courses.
In addition to his lighting experience, Kirk has 18 years of experience working at Exide Technologies where he started out as a front-line supervisor and ended up being Assistant Plant Manager. So he feels right at home in an industrial environment.
Marcus Chezum – Senior Project Administrator, Director of Technology
Marcus is a native of Iowa City, Iowa but moved to the Burlington area 7 years ago, where now he resides with his wife Jennifer and son Jackson (JJ).
Marcus has 6 years’ experience in Logistics, working as an Inventory Key User for a prominent Manufacturer and Distributor along with working as a Plant Manager for a local distributor. Marcus then took a turn into the IT field for 5 years, of which the experience in both of those fields lead him to his current position which utilizes both of his talents.
As the Senior Project Administrator, Marcus works alongside the Project Managers and Engineers to ensure proper contract restraints, product ordering for projects, and project closeouts are done in a timely manner.
As Director of Technology, Marcus maintains the company’s computer infrastructure along with making sure all security parameters are fulfilled.
Marcus is very outgoing and active in community events while being a member of the Greater Burlington Young Professionals and is also a Greater Burlington Leadership course graduate.
In his spare time, Marcus loves spending time with his family and friends, watching the Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers and his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes, all the while trying to find new and unique food dishes to try along with new craft beers.
Melissa Skalinski – Office Administrator
Melissa grew up in Burlington, Iowa. She now resides near Mediapolis, Iowa with her husband Jace and three children Trevor, Tanner, and Madilynn . She has over 10 year’s experience with customer service, and office administration. She is excited to learn more and grow within the lighting industry.
As Office Administrator Melissa is responsible for various office related duties such as processing sales orders for our customers, accounts receivable, accounts payable, taxes, inventory, and much more.
In Melissa’s spare time she enjoys boating with her family on the Mississippi, exploring the local wildlife at Lake Geode or Stars Cave with her kids , camping, and fishing. She also takes part in the local Blondes VS. Brunette’s Alzheimer’s Fundraiser Football team.
